What Is a Screw Conveyor? Structure, Working Principle, and Applications

Author :

A screw conveyor, or auger, is a compact, airtight continuous machine that conveys bulk materials via rotating spiral blades. Its core structure includes a driving device, spiral body, trough and ports; it works on Archimedes' principle and is widely used in grain, building materials, chemical and other industries, unsuitable for viscous or caking materials.

A screw conveyor, commonly known as an auger, is a continuous conveying machine that uses the rotation of spiral blades to push materials. It is widely used for transporting bulk materials in various industries, featuring compact structure, simple operation, and good airtightness. It can realize horizontal, inclined, and short-distance vertical conveying.

Its core structure consists of four parts: the driving device (motor + reducer) provides power and adjusts the speed; the spiral body (spiral shaft + blades) is the core of conveying, and the shape of the blades can be customized according to material characteristics; the trough (U-shaped or tubular) holds materials and guides the direction, with the tubular type having better airtightness; the feed and discharge ports realize the input and output of materials, and their positions and shapes can be designed as needed.

The working principle is based on Archimedes' spiral principle. The driving device drives the spiral shaft to rotate, and the blades exert axial thrust on the materials. Due to gravity and friction with the trough wall, the materials cannot rotate with the blades and can only translate along the bottom of the trough, similar to "a nut moving along a screw", achieving stable conveying. Its conveying efficiency is closely related to the pitch, rotation speed, and material filling coefficient.

The application scenarios cover many fields: grain industry for conveying grains and flour, building materials industry for transferring cement and sand, chemical industry for conveying chemical fertilizers and salts, environmental protection industry for treating sludge, mining industry for transferring ores, etc. It is not suitable for conveying highly viscous and easy-to-caking materials. Through material and structural customization, it can adapt to the special needs of different industries and is an indispensable material transfer equipment in industrial production.
