Common Culprits Behind Bucket Elevator Back-Feeding
Author :
Back-feeding in bucket elevators is mainly caused by damaged or poorly installed buckets, overfeeding, and excessive speeds. Mechanical issues like belt slack, misalignment, and worn discharge deflectors also trigger spillage. Finally, internal buildup, sticky or high-moisture materials, and air draft interference can cause significant material return.

If you operate bucket elevators, you’ve likely faced back-feeding (material falling back into the boot instead of discharging). It drastically cuts efficiency and increases wear. Here are the 9 most common reasons your elevator might be dropping the ball—literally:
Damaged Buckets: Worn, deformed, or cracked buckets can’t hold material properly, leading to spillage during the lift.
Overfeeding: Simply pushing too much volume past the machine's rated capacity will cause immediate overflow.
Excessive Speed: Running too fast generates harsh centrifugal force, flinging material out before it even settles into the bucket.
Internal Buildup: Material caking on the inner casing walls rubs against the buckets, scraping the load right out.
Poor Installation: Loose buckets or incorrect spacing break the continuous flow, creating gaps where material falls through.
Tracking and Slack Issues: Misaligned pulleys or loose belts/chains cause aggressive shaking, rattling the material loose.
Worn Discharge Deflectors: If the outlet baffle plate is worn or its clearance is too wide, material slips backward into the casing.
Sticky Materials: High moisture or stickiness prevents a clean discharge, sending leftover material on a return trip down.
Airflow Interference: Damaged casing seals or internal drafts can create unexpected air currents that literally blow the material out of the buckets.
Keeping a close eye on these areas during routine maintenance is the easiest way to keep your throughput high and your boot clean!
