How to Choose a Conveyor System for High-Moisture Materials
Author :
Choosing the right conveyor for wet materials requires corrosion-resistant stainless steel and waterproof components. To prevent clogs, utilize shaftless screws or specialized belt scrapers that handle sticky buildup. Finally, ensure liquid containment with drip pans or enclosed troughs to maintain hygiene. These features turn messy, high-moisture handling into a clean, reliable, and efficient operation.

Handling dry, free-flowing materials is standard engineering. However, moving high-moisture materials—whether it’s dewatered sludge, food processing waste, or wet chemical pastes—introduces a unique set of challenges. High moisture content often leads to stickiness, corrosion, and sanitation issues that can bring a standard production line to a grinding halt.
If you are selecting a conveyor for wet applications, here are the three critical factors you must evaluate to ensure efficiency and longevity.
1. Combatting "Carryback" and Stickiness
The biggest enemy of high-moisture conveying is adhesion. Wet materials tend to stick to the belt on the return run (known as carryback), falling off in piles under the conveyor.
For Belt Conveyors: You must install high-quality primary and secondary belt cleaners (scrapers). Look for belts made of hydrophobic materials or those with textured surfaces designed to release wet products easily.
For Screw Conveyors: Consider a shaftless screw conveyor. Traditional shafted screws can suffer from material wrapping around the center pipe and clogging. A shaftless design allows sticky, wet material to move freely without bridging.
2. Corrosion Resistance and Material Choice
Moisture accelerates oxidation. A standard carbon steel frame will rust rapidly when exposed to wet materials, especially if the liquid is acidic or salty (common in food processing).
Stainless Steel: For most high-moisture applications, 304 or 316 stainless steel is the gold standard. It resists rust and withstands aggressive wash-downs.
Watertight Components: Ensure that motors and bearings are rated IP65 or higher to prevent water ingress during operation or cleaning.
3. Liquid Management and Hygiene
High-moisture materials drip. If your conveyor isn't designed to contain liquid, you create slip hazards and cross-contamination risks.
Drip Pans: Essential for belt conveyors to catch liquid falling from the return side.
Enclosed Systems: Tube conveyors or covered trough screws are excellent for keeping the moisture inside the system and preventing splashes on the factory floor.
Clean-in-Place: If the material is biological (like food), the system must feature an open design or spray bars that allow for easy sanitization to prevent bacterial growth.
Summary
Choosing the right conveyor for wet materials isn't just about moving product from A to B; it's about water management and preventing clogs. By prioritizing stainless steel construction, specialized belt scrapers, or shaftless designs, you can turn a messy operation into a clean, efficient process.
